Earth Unlocked is an interactive travel and environmental-awareness app that helps people understand where they’ve been, the estimated emissions associated with their journeys, and how different travel choices could change their impact. Users connect to the app through OwnTracks, a free to use mobile app. This then automatically uploads your travel and location data through an encrypted https so they can explore their personal travel history on a 3D globe or detailed map. Animated transport icons bring journeys to life, while filters and playback let users revisit individual trips or see how their travel changes over time. The problem Earth Unlocked addresses is the gap between knowing where you’ve travelled and understanding what those journeys mean environmentally. Travel records show locations, while carbon figures can feel abstract. Earth Unlocked connects the two, helping users identify which journeys contribute most to their estimated travel emissions and explore possible alternatives. The app includes transport breakdowns, month-by-month emissions views, corrections for incorrectly classified journeys, and “what if?” scenarios such as switching transport, sharing a car or changing vehicle type. An optional AI-assisted trip planner suggests travel alternatives and compares their estimated emissions. To make learning more engaging, the “My Earth” area lets users earn XP and “leaves” through exploration and learning challenges. These unlock character outfits and animal companions, including penguins, polar bears and sea turtles. Earth Unlocked aims to make travel impact personal, visual and easier to act on. The current prototype uses estimated emissions, clearly labelled demo comparison profiles and environmental-event layers. Game rewards represent learning progress, rather than carbon savings or offsets.
