Ray, a heavyset 55-year-old ex-boxer, moves through a
world that shouts at him then gives up. At a family
dinner the sound suddenly drops away — the reveal that
he's deaf, withheld until then. Worn down by a
humiliating pharmacy trip and pitying strangers, he
stops trying to rejoin the hearing world and withdraws.

Ray learns sign, one word at a time. At the final
dinner the roles invert: Ray and his granddaughter Mia
sign fluently while the hearing family becomes the
outsiders — reconnection through a language no one has
to hear.
