On the night before her family leaves Centralia, Pennsylvania, Ava records the story of how an ordinary trash fire became an underground disaster that consumed her hometown. Her account carries us from the fire’s accidental spread into abandoned coal mines in 1962 to a terrifying 1981 sinkhole that nearly claims her brother. Blending intimate family drama with the historical and geological story of the Centralia mine fire, the film explores how a catastrophe can destroy a community without ever touching its homes with visible flame, and what it means to leave behind a place that is still standing, but can no longer be called home.
